I finally got across town and crawled up into the loft at my dad's house to retrieve this beauty, my first ever valve amp, a Sound City 120. It's in a sorry state, needs a good clean and I should probably put the nameplate on the right way up. Crappy low light camera pics because it's staying in the hallway until I've wiped it down. Six, count 'em, EL34 tubes. These are the original Mullards from who knows when, transformers by Partridge. Thing's built like a tank, weighs an absolute ton and makes a sound like a factory chimney falling over. If you've never played through one of these monsters then you really do owe it to yourself to experience the hellish volume they can produce.

I assume 120 is the wattage? 6 EL34s at 120W? They must be running hot as satans arsehole after a phaal.

120 Watts is indeed the power rating but what this amp has beyond anything is clean headroom and earth-shattering transient power. There's none of the distorted compression you normally get from an overdriving amp, you get dynamics like nothing you've ever played through before.

I imagine this is going to be like the valve Carlsboro amps. Insanely loud with virtually no breakup even cranked. I bet that thing is full of tagstrips and is filled with grime. Get her open and snap some pics!
