To go up against the "most disappointing effect ever", what is one that you never thought you'd like but ended up falling in love with it?
For me, it's a bit of a cheat, but it's the particle reverb on the Line 6 M/HD series of effects. Never even thought about it, randomly was messing about with patches one day, and found that thing.

I need to find more uses for it. I've been all about Shimmer for my main cleans, but I can see some use out of this thing definitely

That is a pretty awesome sound and I can see it being useful for quite a lot of my songs. I'll have to look into these further. Is it on all of the current line6 products?
I was very pleasantly surprised by the Catalinbread Naga Viper. I had never tried a treble booster before but it added a really nice focus to my sound and was pretty much perfect for metal as an alternative to the regular TS based pedal.

I believe it's on the M5 to the M13, and all the HD stuff. The M5 would be the cheapest way to get it.
I'm obsessed with Treble Boosters for lead stuff, blame Brian May for that.

Way back at the dawn of time (around 1984 probably) my friend bought a crappy Les Paul copy and a dreadful MOSFET amp and an effects pedal ... an original Colorsound Dipthonizer. Noisy as hell but it made some awesome noises. At least that's the way I remember it. It probably sounded like a goose farting in the fog really.

cheapo daphon sd1 clone  also cheapo danelectro timmy clone which i thought was alright but not that usable until i started using it as a boost |

Bad Monkey - It still amazes me how good this thing is given the cost. My Akai Drive 3 is like that. £29, and yet better than a lot of boosts I've used. Sturdy as anything too. |

A lot of the Akai/Biyang stuff is ridiculously well made. Funnily enough they actual use higher quality parts at the component level than most big name manufacturers do. The main downside on them though is generally the size as they tend to be on the larger side of things. |

I think the Fulltone OCD v3 needs a lot more recognition too. Whilst I haven't even bought it once. I have ended up building about 5 of them after selling them to people who decide they like it when they try mine therefore making me build another for myself.
The v4 OCD is a load of crap however. Very honky & bloated sounding.

I had like 3 of them (the drive, the muff and the phaser). IIRC, the phaser was bad more or less out of the box, and the muff went bad within about a week or so. the replacement phaser was bad out of the box, too (at which point I cut my losses). the replacement muff still works but the switch is a little crackly which doesn't inspire much confidence. and the drive died when it was just outside the warranty. they did sound pretty good when they worked, to be fair. but yeah. |

Most manufacturers use really poor tolerance unbranded resistors and caps. The switches are a bit finicky though but easy enough to replace. The main issue with the switches is that they are PCB mounted which flexes and cracks the solder joints sometimes if people are heavy footed. MXR do the same thing in all of there recent pedals but the smaller enclosures are sturdier so it isn't as much of a problem. |

Actually yeah, Fitzy from my band got a Biyang OD, and it TOTALLY transformed his Ironheart, that was unexpectedly awesome as fuck, hahah!

I appreciate what you're saying, but unless you're good at DIY/soldering, it doesn't really matter how it breaks, just that it breaks. |
