The real answer is 1 (sorry, should have put that in spoiler tags). But my actual answer is 4.
Electric - 2hb, fixed bridge. Use most of the time. Electric - HSS because bridge singles serve no purpose to me, but I love neck and middle singles, and may as well have a trem in case I ever learn to use one Acoustic, steel string. Acoustic, nylon string.

Two minimum. One loaded with passives & one with actives.

As many as it takes to convince me that buying guitars makes me happy.
Right now I'm saying 6, a guitar in each tuning I use (7 string, 8 string, and 7 down tuned to G), with a backup of most/each.

I forgot I need a bass as well. Just one though. I have 11 guitars at the moment, and I genuinely wonder what the fuck most of them are for.

I have long since concluded that I am unlike most other guitarists in that I feel no great need to own many guitars at all. Twice in my life I've owned three guitars and both times I've ended up selling one because I just didn't need all three. It simplifies matters for me that I have no interest in single coil guitars, though I may at some point buy a third to use with some P90 pickups.
At the moment I use a PRS SE Custom 24 that I use as a bit more of a 'Metal' guitar. This is partly because the pickups are very 80s Metal, partly because it has a trem and partly because the upper fret access is very good. My other guitar is a Les Paul Studio that I use as a more versatile option. The tones of the two are quite different, which suits me very well but both (especially the Gibson) can cover our entire set if called upon to do so.
Everything I need is covered by these two guitars and I love them both so to buy a third would just dilute my enjoyment of what I have. I just don't see the point in that.

I really only need 2, a main and back-up. I have one. Ideally I'd have; *Main + back-up 7's *Drop C/C# 6'er. *8 string *5 or 6 string bass

I currently have 3, the only addition I really need to make is an acoustic.
It all depends on your situation.. if you gig a lot you want a back up for each tuning you play in.

Yep that's exactly it for me. As of this past Saturday I now have two gigging bands, and I'm a relentless worrier so not at least owning a backup in case of major issues just doesn't work for me. However, I do just love guitars too, so I have a few more than I realistically "need". They are just pretty

I can't take credit for that one, I've seen that posted before loads of times by other people Being serious for a second, for me it'd depend on the tones I needed (and whether I needed more than one guitar for that), the different tunings I needed, and whether I needed spares or whatever for gigging.

I'm gonna change my answer. One of each type.
1 electric, 1 of each main breed of acoustic and 1 bass.
I think each of those gives you something very important the other doesn't, but if it comes to the proverbial crunch, and you want to play blues and all you have is a 27" scale EMG equipped 8 string tuned to F, you can still do it.
Playing > gear is what I'm saying, I suppose.
This notion that 'in order to play X you NEED this, this, this and this, because the really very similar stuff you already have just can't do it' is a red herring that's been sold to us by people trying to sell us stuff.
Says the man with 6 electrics, 3 acoustics and 2 basses. I know. Shut up.

Yeah I agree. I have way too many guitars too. And I still want more. I read the other day that sunshine is like heroin (probably BS, it was an AOL article). Well, I dunno about that, we don't get sunshine here in NI (plus I've never tried heroin), but whoever wrote that article mustn't play guitar...

I had a comment but it belongs in another board so I will hope on over there. I only need one more guitar. An explorer, it must be white and it must have EMGs. ALso it can't have a scratchplate. Therefore it has to be this.
