I would put money on it that some soft bastard somewhere has swapped said IBZ's with the proper DiMarzio retail units and raved about them.

More warmth, focus & depth. It's inevitable. To answer the question, no, I've never bought a guitar with EMGs stock.

^ Funnily enough I bought my jackson dkmgt basically cos it had EMGs (and it was cheap enough that I figured it was worth it). Figured it was worth having a guitar with EMGs.

I guess you have one of the newer basswood ones? My DKMGT granted its a very old one came with EMG HZ's and an EMG afterburner. It sounded awful.

I think it was specced as alder- though I've seen some posts on UG I think by someone who stripped his and I think it was alder with a basswood cap (or vice-versa, I forget). I haven't checked, it has that solid black forest finish. It was one of the older MIJ ones (but with the "real" active EMGs), I got it when the Oxford Guitar Gallery had that big massive sale about 6 months before they shut for good so I only paid around £300 for it (IIRC) and at that point everywhere else was selling them for the guts of £500 (EDIT: actually now I think, maybe £550!) I figured it was worth a shot for that kind of money, since while they wouldn't be my favourite type of pickup for most of the stuff I play, I play enough stuff which uses EMGs that I could probably sort of half justify it...

I really like my DKMGT. I really struggled to find pickups that worked well in it though. EMGs sounded really flat and dull which surprised me as normally they're fairly bright.
The painkiller made all my amps sound solidstate.
The better options were the duncan fullshred which was a bit too hot and now I have Black Winters in it which are pretty well balanced.

Yeah mine's a nice guitar. I probably play it far more unplugged than plugged in though since I don't normally need that EMG tone for most of the stuff I play. I think mine sounded pretty good, though, fairly bright.
I thought the full shred was sort of like Duncan's version of the PAF pro (which is pretty low output)? I've never tried one though so I've probably fallen victim to internet BS on that one...

I'd say it's tighter than most companies ceramics. Check it out in this video I think its the second pickup.

All things considered I have warmed to duncans over the years. I used to hate them. That was many moons ago, though. I still think the blackout is a pale imitation of an 85 though.

I'm tempted to grab an EMTY7 and a Retribution 7 (the Retribution 7 for obvious reasons).

Thanks Yeah that sounds pretty good (though I can never tell much from those clips, they all sound quite similar to me ). I never really play that type of metal (hesitant to say what I think it is because I don't know and I know you guys are really into metal All things considered I have warmed to duncans over the years. I used to hate them. That was many moons ago, though. Yeah same here. I think, like with a lot of things, I only got to try models I wasn't that fussed on and sort of wrote off the whole company based on that. I still think I prefer Duncan's lower output/more vintage pickups, though, to their hotter ones.
