I've never been a real fan of EMG pickups, though I think I could be tempted by a 57/66 set. The 66 neck sounds particularly impressive from the clips I've heard.

I'm in agreement with the right honourable gentleman in the OP.

Well, I'd be interested in reading some reviews of specific models, especially the 57/66 set

EMGs don't need reviews.

lol, they do if I am ever to change my view on them. I nearly went for a 57/66 set a few months ago but without having a decent review etc. to go on I decided it was too big a risk given my usual stance on all things EMG. It was the 66 that interested me most as Andy James seems to get an awesome tone from it. The 57 just sounded more 'EMG' for want of a better description.

Well, tony is right, mattayus has a 57/66 set. Last I heard, he loves them. I have 81s in the bridge of my 3 main guitars, 60, 85 and 2xSA in the not-bridge. Other than that, I'm familiar with 707s, 81-7s and the het-set and nothing else.
Except their passives, but they don't count.

This is the best review-not-review ever.

There's a lesson in there somewhere.
Also in thousands of pro musicians relying on EMGs in all genres for touring and recording. I mean, I'm not one to make arguments from authority, or popular consensus, but there really is a reason for that.
It always tickles me when someones looking for recommendations for some boutique pickup and they say they want a guitar tone 'Like metallica, KSE, whitechapel, slayer' etc etc etc.

One thing that I've never seen though is anyone saying they want to sound like Slayer.

I am happy to concede that EMG are excellent at what they do, I just don't think they're 'me'. I don't like things surgically tight and for the most part I confess I find the tone to be a bit cold and sterile. They just don't have the warmth, depth and richness of an alnico passive to me but it's entirely personal preferences.

I am happy to concede that EMG are excellent at what they do They are! Sorry, but the notion that they're just for detuned metal is plain wrong; that thats what they 'do'. Dislike away, but they can be used for jazz (they were originally designed for it actually), blues, rock...pretty much anything. For example (and to my taste, obviously) my all time favourite cleans are 60 - SA - Holy diver. In that order. We are, of course, all entitled to our taste, but they are very good in no and mid distortion roles (according to the tastes of others, it seems, like mark knopfler).
