In light of recent events on my end, I thought it'd be a great idea to start a thread in which you lovely folks can throw your ideas and musings of a musically philosophical nature for open discussion (or dissection, your choice). Bandmate problems? Wanting to move your band onto higher plains? Is a degree in music necessary? All kinds of questions, feel free to post them here. ____________________________________________________________________________________
I recently pondered on the potential idea about the declining standards of musicians in general these days. I went to a highly revered jam night in my area last night and found that a lot of the degree students that show up (not 1st years, but 3rd and 4th years), most of them were really quite weak. Singers with poor intonation, guitarists that exclusively omit taste over technique as well as drummers that seem to focus much more of sloppy pseudo-gospel fills more like Lars Ulrich than anything else. Do you feel that the standards of those that class themselves as 'professionals' have slipped? Have things gotten better than ever before thanks to the internet and other technological revelations and I'm just possibly being a sour git after a single bad experience?

I find more than often people who are fired up to do things themselves rather than studying and going through college/university tend to have far more passion for music and going on from that put out far better performances and have more unique styles of their own rather than pre-printed styles passed down through education.
Of course in this crowd you also get the chugga chugga scream crash bang crowd as well.
