My birthday is rapidly approaching and I've suggested to my wife that I'd quite like another guitar. No particular surprise there but this time I fancy an electro-acoustic to give me something a bit different. I know absolutely nothing at all about acoustic guitars so I'm in desperate need of advice. I know I want something with a single cutaway, I know I want a neck that doesn't feel any chunkier than what I have already (if possible) and I know I don't really want to spend over £200, though I am happy to look at pre-owned as well as new. Are there any particular models/makes I should be looking at? So far I am looking at these models:
Yamaha APX
Ovation Celebrity
Takamine G series
Freshman Renogade
Cort AD880
Cort SFX-DAO

I can't be of much help with this as I too know very little. All that I can say is go out and try them. If you click with one then get it!

I can tell you, as I have one, that the APX is a pretty mediocre guitar. Maybe it's just a bit too glassy and jangly for my taste. Folky finger-picker type thing.
It's better than my other acoustic though, which I sounds like its made from cardboard.
In case there are different ones (there probably are) mine is an APX 4A. On reflection it's not bad for the money, but comparing it to a good acoustic (mum has a martin somethingorother, for example, that I've ABd with it), it's a bit nasty.
All things considered, I think acoustics are very hard to do well on a budget. It's also much more important to get one that you like, as there's nothing you can do to remedy anything about the sound later, except change strings, which has about as much effect as it does on electrics.

My first choice as it stands is a Takamine G series with the NEX body shape. It looks like a very decent guitar for the money.

I've got a Takamine that I bought new in 1987. Neck hasn't moved a bit, belly hasn't raised up, neck's as stable as a lamp post and it still sounds sweet. I wish I'd bought five when I had the chance.

Yamaha APX 600 is an improved one and it also includes the tunes that are useful for amplified scenarios. I am also in favor of Takamine GD30CE - Black, I love its build and colour. However, it would great if you gift a kit of quality volume pedals to her with one of these guitars.
